Beard and Moustache Hair Transplant

Only suitable candidates are transsexuals and males

The procedure is extremely refined and delicate involving transplantation of only one or two hair. Each hair should be at least 5 mm length to adjust the direction. The procedure gives excellent and immediate visible results. If only a few parts are to be treated, hair could be taken from the beard only. Other wise if complete beard area is to be covered hairs for transplant are taken from the scalp. Scalp hairs resemble the beard hair the most in their structure. Since beard or mustache hairs are very thick it is usually difficult to find the match. Beard and mustache hairs have a unique property of growing individually.

Beard And Moustache Hair Transplant

The demand of non scalp transplant has drastically increased and the main areas of non scalp transplantation are Beard, Moustache, eyebrow , eyelash and rarely pubic area. The main reasons for Moustache or beard transplant are –

  • Scar
  • Congenital no growth of hairs
  • left lip
  • Folliculitis
  • Burns
  • In Trans gender Surgery

Ethnical variation in Beard and Moustache transplant

Beard in all males starts growing from puberty and increase in density occur till mid thirties. There is a difference in biological cycle of beard as compared to scalp hairs. In beard the resting phase is 10 to 18 weeks . There is lot of ethnical variation in beard and Moustache growth as in Indians there is dense growth of beard where as in Japanese and Chinese there is very less density or no growth of beard. The hairs in beard are mainly single.

Planning of surgery in beard and Moustache

The density of the beard is less as compared to the scalp. Normally we require about 25 to 30 FU in beard and 30 to 45 Fu in Moustache areas to give good result. The thickness of hairs in beard is more as compared to the scalp hairs. The direction of the beard area is very important. The beard areas have direction depending on the area side buns- direction is downward and backward angle of mandible Direction is down ward and backward and as you move toward mid line the direction changes toward mid line and downwards in the lower Mid part of Neck – Direction is upwards in the chin areas – direction is downwards. The angle in which these hairs they come out of the skin is about 15 to 40 degrees and we have to maintain these during transplantation.

Anesthesia

Local field infiltration is required during beard transplant and we are using mixture of Ropivicaine and Lidocaine with 1:2 dilution with Adrenaline saline to do the field block.

Slits

The slits are made with about 0.5 mm to 0.7 mm needles width. the direction and angle is properly taken care while making the slits. The depth go the slits is slightly more as compared to the scalp so that there is no popping and beaded appearance post surgery. we go to the depth of about 3 to 4 mm .

Grafts in Beard and Moustache Transplant

The graft we are mainly using is single follicle and some 2 folliclular unit. We normally prefer to do dissection of the follicles under microscope to prevent beaded appearance as commonly seen in patient who have undergone beard transplant with FUE without Microscopic dissection. The graft taken with strip technique has the advantage that they are 3 to 4 mm in in length and direction can be easily controlled.

Post operative instruction

The patient is advised to take soft diet for one day and then he can have normal diet Spray is given to him to spray and clean the area. Normal face wash is recommended after 2 weeks with normal face wash

Results

The result usually appear in 3 months but best after 7 to 8 months.
